    38 years and still rocking...

Annette and I went to the Huey Lewis/Chicago concert at Riverbend (an outdoor arena) last night. It was a great show! When most people think of Chicago, they think of "Hard Habit to Break", "You're the Inspiration" and other bubble-gum, cheesy (but enjoyable) pop ballads--without realizing that in the late 60s and throughout the 70s Chicago was an innovation, trend-setting rock band. They showed it last night, concentrating on their older songs (other than 2 songs from their new album, they didn't play anything from Chicago 17 on).

We purchased lawn tickets (no chair, just a patch of grass with no roof). I saw that rain was in the forecast, so we brought along a couple of hats and rain ponchos. When we parked the car, however, the sun was shining and the sky was clear--so we left the ponchos in the car. Bad idea! At about 9:30, a huge thunderstorm rolled through. At one point, much of the power went out--but the band kept on playing while the crowd (everyone knew the words) sang along. It was actually a cool moment. When the storm subsided, about 85% of the people on the lawn had left and we got to enjoy the rest of the show with a better view and plenty of elbow room.

As I mentioned, Huey Lewis & the News was the opening act. They sounded good and really rocked on "Workin' for a Livin'" and "Heart of Rock and Roll". I was disappointed they didn't sing "Bad is Bad", my favorite Huey song. Huey also sang a couple of songs with Chicago, which was cool to see. Overall, it was a great night!
